Reasons To Stay Home From School
 Parents and Students,
 
 Listed below are the Stafford County Health Services guidelines which parents should use in determining if a sick child should stay at home and when a previously sick child is ready to return to school. If you have any questions please contact your school nurse. Additional information is available on the county website:

MEDICAL EXCLUSIONS FROM SCHOOL
  REASONS TO STAY HOME FROM SCHOOL
 
 
1.      Nurse Assessment of possible contagious condition or risk to health
2.      Temperature > or = to 100 degrees within 24 hours
3.      Active vomiting within 24 hours
4.      Recurring diarrhea within 24 hours
5.      Swollen or extremely painful joints from injury
6.      Severe earaches (pain) or chronic cough
7.      Suspected contagious disease
Chicken pox - return 5-7 days after first eruption.
Conjunctivitis - associated with itchiness or purulent drainage. Return after 24 hours of treatment or when purulent drainage stops.
Pediculosis - return after treatment and nit removal.
Flu
Scabies - return after 24 hours of treatment.
Impetigo- return after treatment begun. May require covering area.
Ringworm of the Skin - return after treatment initiated. Usually requires covering area at school.
Ringworm of the Scalp - physician note required and required oral treatment initiated.
Antibiotic treatment of less than 24 hours treatment and possibility that student may be communicable to others
8.      Any nose discharge that is green or yellow (particularly preschool)
9.      Any undiagnosed skin rashes
Things to know to start the school year
Below is a list of items (*) provided by the school system to all clinics and used regularly for first aid. Should you know of a reason why these items should not be used on your son/daughter please contact the school nurse at 658-6080 ext 1281.

Bacitracin
Bactine
Chloroseptic spray
Anti itch lotion
Vaseline
Oragel
Vinyl gloves
(*) generic equivalent may be substituted for any

Medication Policy:
Please review the Stafford County Public Schools medication policy in your Code of Conduct booklet and on school fusion on the school nurse web page under clinic links. Any medication (including over the counter medications) must have a physician’s prescription on file in the clinic updated each school year on the Request for Medication/Treatment During School Hours form. This form and all other medication and care plan forms can be accessed and downloaded from the school nurse page on the school fusion website.
